Is there anyone on earth who doesn’t like mashed potatoes? Maybe someone on a keto diet, but aside from that, I don’t think it’s possible!
Mashed potatoes are eaten in almost every corner of the world, from aloo bharta in India to colcannon in Ireland, irio in Kenya, and brændende kærlighed in Denmark. There are very few places you can visit that won’t give you a warming bowl of freshly mashed potatoes!
After spending some time recipe-testing these keto-friendly Cauliflower Mashed Potatoes and their close relative, these Healthy Garlic Mashed Cauliflower Potatoes, I think something inside me just wanted to go the opposite way and make some “real” mashed potatoes.

Are these Whole30 Mashed Potatoes Healthy?
While potatoes can be healthy for you in moderation, there are very few extra ingredients in this recipe, so the nutritional value is limited.
Ghee is a good source of healthy fats, and yellow potatoes contain carbohydrates, which provide your body with energy. However, this recipe is high in calories, so if you’re looking for a lower-carb option, I would check out the keto-friendly cauliflower mash recipes I mentioned above.
But sometimes you just need a comforting bowl of mashed potatoes, and that’s okay!
What is the Whole30 Diet?
The Whole30 diet is a 30-day nutritional program designed to eliminate foods that may cause inflammation, digestive issues, or other health problems. It emphasizes whole, unprocessed foods while prohibiting certain categories of processed food.
Foods that are allowed include unprocessed meats (beef, chicken, turkey, pork) and seafood, all types of vegetables, fresh and dried fruits without added sugars, nuts and seeds (except peanuts which are legumes), healthy fats like olive oil, coconut oil, ghee, and avocado oil, and fresh or dried herbs and spices without additives.
Foods that are prohibited include all forms of sugar, all types of alcohol, all grains like wheat, rice, oats, and corn, most legumes (except for green peas, snap peas, and snow peas), dairy products, and any processed foods with additives like MSG or carrageenan.
The goal of Whole30 is to reset your body by eliminating these foods for a month. After the 30 days, participants can gradually reintroduce foods to identify any potential sensitivities or intolerances. This recipe exclusively contains whole, unprocessed foods, with no added sugars, grains, legumes, and dairy.

How to make ahead and store
These Whole30 mashed potatoes are AMAZING for countless reasons, one of them being that they make great leftovers! I recommend storing the mashed potatoes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days. You can also freeze them in a freezer-safe bag and thaw them overnight before using on top of a shepherd’s pie, or however you desire! I like to make this mash the day before I serve it, and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator overnight before gently reheating it on the stovetop with a spoonful of extra ghee on top.

Ingredients
- 4 pounds yellow potatoes quartered
- 2 teaspoons sea salt plus more for seasoning
- 6 tablespoons ghee
- 1 cup unsweetened cashew milk check ingredients to make sure it's Whole30
Instructions
- Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water so the potatoes are fully submerged with an extra 1-inch of water on top. Add the salt to the pot and stir.

- Bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat slightly and cook until the potatoes are easily pierced with a fork, about 15 to 20 minutes.

- Once cooked, drain the water and mash the potatoes well with a potato masher.

- In a small saucepan, melt the ghee and milk on low heat until the ghee is melted, then stir the ghee/milk mixture into the potatoes until fluffy. Season to taste with salt and enjoy.
