This Mustard Barbecue Sauce is packed with bold and zesty flavors!

Mustard Barbecue Sauce

No cookout or barbecue dish is complete without good barbecue sauce. Of course, in today’s world, there are many different varieties of barbecue sauce from which to choose. This recipe for mustard barbecue sauce is one that warrants your full attention. Rumor has it this recipe dates back to the 1700s, when German settlers arrived in South Carolina. That might explain why it combines the German fondness for mustard with a beloved traditional Southern sauce. But no matter how it was created, we’re glad it was.

There’s nothing too challenging about the recipe itself; this is a sauce anyone can whip up. It only takes about ten minutes to combine the ingredients and let them simmer on the stove into a beautiful, cohesive sauce. That simplicity gives you a new style of barbecue sauce that’s a little sweet, a little tangy, and a little spicy. Slather it over some baby back ribs, stir it into a dish of baked beans, or toss some chicken wings in it. In a world that’s full of condiments, this mustard barbecue sauce is truly unique in its taste.

Is This Mustard Barbecue Sauce Healthy?

It’s important to keep in mind that this mustard barbecue sauce is a condiment, so you’re probably not eating it for its health benefits. Both light brown sugar and honey are part of the recipe, so if you’re watching your sugar intake, that’s something to be aware of. While you can reduce the quantities of either, it will change the flavor of the sauce and leave you with something that’s more astringent and tart. All in all, this is the type of condiment to enjoy in moderation.
To make the sauce vegan-friendly, simply use maple syrup instead of honey.

Many Different Types Of Mustard

This recipe calls for classic yellow mustard. But if you prefer a different style of mustard, use that instead! For instance, Dijon might give the barbecue sauce a little more kick. It’s sharper, more complex, and bolder than yellow mustard. Spicy brown mustard will add more heat to your sauce, while whole-grain mustard can give the sauce a palate-pleasing texture. There’s also beer-infused mustard, which would give the sauce a unique hoppy and pungent note. Experiment and see what you like best!

How Do I Store Leftovers?

Once you have your mustard barbecue sauce in a jar, it should last around 2-3 weeks in the fridge. You can also store it for up to 3 months if you wish to put it in the freezer. Let it thaw in the fridge overnight before using it.

Serving Suggestions

In theory, you can put mustard barbecue sauce on anything you want. I happen to think it makes a great dipping sauce for Air-Fryer Chicken Tenders or even Keto Chicken Tenders, which can also be prepared in an air fryer. It can be the perfect condiment for Smoked Chicken Breast or even some BBQ Paleo Chicken Wings. However, don’t think that this sauce only works on chicken. There’s nothing wrong with using it on top of some Slow-Cooker Pulled Pork or even some Low-Carb Fish Taco Bowls if you’re feeling a little adventurous.
