This Watermelon Fruit Salad is sweet, hydrating, and full of antioxidants.

Watermelon Fruit Salad

Ah, summer. For me, summer means the scent of freshly-mowed lawns and blooming honeysuckle, long afternoons, and late sunsets on the beach. It’s also when all of my favorite fruits are in season—including melons. And I think most folks would agree that watermelon is the fruit of summer.

Despite the fact that watermelon is at its best during the summer months, most of us can get our hands on one year-round. No matter when you eat it, you will feel like you are enjoying a warm summer breeze at your favorite beach or picnic spot. It might be a snowy day outside your window, but it’s always summer when there’s watermelon on the menu.

This recipe combines watermelon with my three favorite berries (strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries) to create a colorful delight you can enjoy anytime. Keeping a bowl of this fruit salad in the fridge makes breakfast a cinch. When in need of a healthy boost, I can add it to my yogurt and granola or have it on the side with my eggs and sautéed spinach. It’s also the perfect fix for my sweet tooth after dinner.

Is This Watermelon Fruit Salad Healthy?

I can’t think of anything better for infusing your body with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals than a nice bowl of fruit salad. The lime juice, strawberries, and watermelon contain lots of vitamin C, and watermelon has a high water content so it helps hydrate the body. This fruit salad does contain some added sugars with the honey, but you can easily leave it out if you’re avoiding sugar. The ripe fruit will provide plenty of natural sweetness on its own.

Overall, this fruit salad is dairy-free, gluten-free, and low in calories and fat, so it’s easy to incorporate into lots of different diets. You can make this fruit salad vegan by substituting the honey for agave nectar or maple syrup.

Get Creative With The Citrus Dressing

While this recipe for watermelon fruit salad contains lime juice, you can also substitute lemon, orange, tangerine, or grapefruit juice in the recipe. A little citrus zest will enhance the flavor. You can even mix two or more types of citrus juices together. I sometimes use shredded coconut instead of fresh mint for a different flavor sensation, and you might enjoy swapping the mint for fresh basil!

How Do I Store Leftovers?

You can store leftover watermelon fruit salad in the fridge in an airtight container for 3-4 days. Keep in mind that a 4-day-old watermelon fruit salad will probably be a lot juicier than a fresh batch, so you may wish to drain some of the juice before serving. Personally, I love the juice, so I keep it and sip it out of the bowl when I’m done!

Serving Suggestions

Serve your fruit salad for breakfast or on hot summer afternoons as a snack. For breakfast, serve bowls of watermelon fruit salad alongside Baked Eggs or an Air-Fryer Omelet. For an afternoon snack, I think it goes nicely in place of the other fruit in this Yogurt Parfait (just make sure you eat it right after you make it!). And after a filling dinner of Chicken And Pork Adobo, this fruit salad makes an excellent light dessert. Of course, watermelon is perfect for BBQs. You can serve this salad with Air-Fryer Hamburgers and Broccoli Slaw.
