Make your next brunch totally on trend and mouthwatering with this honey-coated Twisted Bacon.

A white platter filled with crispy, honey-coated twisted bacon pieces.

I am so glad that this twisted bacon recipe went viral on TikTok in 2021. I can’t imagine how sad my life would be if I’d never learned how to twist bacon to get that perfect crisp every time.

The recipe originally came from Abby Durlewanger of @houseofketo (she later changed her TikTok handle to @abbyexplainsitall) and was viewed more than 1.6 million times. This influencer shares recipes and claims that her whole family (even kids and dogs) follow a keto diet. People obviously had some opinions about that last statement, but we’re just here for the bacon!

I don’t really think I need to explain why you’ll love a recipe focused only on bacon, but I’ll try! So what sets this bacon apart from “regular” bacon is the texture that is created when it’s twisted before it hits the oven. It becomes chewy and juicy, but still crispy at the same time. The cooking time can be adjusted if you like your bacon less or extra crispy.

The bacon is lightly seasoned with honey and black pepper, giving it that sweet and savory flavor we all dream about. It is also baked in the oven, so you just pop the pan of bacon in and go about your business instead of laboring over the stovetop. You can also change up the seasoning to your preference. My suggestions include garlic powder, onion powder, or brown sugar.

Is Twisted Bacon Healthy?

Bacon is not considered healthy, since it’s high in sodium, fat, and cholesterol. Experts recommend enjoying it in moderation. However, it is a good source of protein, is low in carbohydrates, and contains selenium, phosphorus, and vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, and B12. Because this recipe calls for baking the bacon, it is a bit healthier than frying it.

You can easily make this recipe keto by replacing the honey or maple syrup with erythritol or stevia. Make it Whole 30-friendly by switching up the seasoning, since honey, maple syrup, erythritol, and stevia are not Whole 30-compliant. Try red pepper flakes or everything bagel seasoning!

Ingredients for Twisted Bacon: raw bacon slices, wooden skewers, honey or maple syrup, and cracked black pepper.

What Is The Point Of Twisting Bacon?

Twisting bacon allows it to cook more evenly and locks in that greasy goodness. It gives you the perfect combination of chewy and crispy. Also, since it is twisted instead of flat, it’s more compact, leaving more space on the baking sheet for additional bacon! Lastly, it’s just a lot of fun.

To twist your bacon, we recommend using wooden skewers. Be sure to soak the skewers in water beforehand. You can enjoy the bacon on or off the sticks when it’s done cooking. If you do not have skewers, simply twist each piece of bacon tightly and place each piece snug next to each other on the baking sheet so they don’t come undone.

How Do I Store Leftovers?

Store leftover bacon in an airtight container in the fridge for 4 to 5 days.
To reheat, pop it in the microwave for 30 seconds or in the oven at 400°F for 3 to 5 minutes.

Serving Suggestions

When we think of bacon, we think of breakfast. Serve these delicious twists with a Paleo Sweet Potato Breakfast Bowl or Fried Eggs In The Oven. Twisted bacon is also an amazing topping for Tasty Stuffed Sweet Potatoes, cobb salad, or this refreshing Pomegranate Persimmon Salad. Finally, how about twisted bacon for dessert? Bacon Beer Cupcakes are a real crowd-pleaser and would be so delightful with twisted bacon on top.
