This sticky-spicy-sweet deliciousness is sponsored by my friends over at Persil®! I’m a messy cook, and they keep me nice and clean!
These sticky slow cooker chicken wings are bursting with Asian flavor! You’d never know they’re a healthier, paleo and whole30 compliant appetizer!

Some days, you just have to wing it.
OH MY GOSH YOU GUYS. I have been waiting to say that FOREVER.
Orrrr, at least since the creation of these glorious, messy, sticky and spicy-sweet chicken wings. It feels so good to finally get the lame pun off my chest! Aaaand exhale.
Okay now that we’ve got all of that outta the way, let’s get onto the finger-lickin’ honey garlic chicken goodness that is ready to be shoveled into your hungry mouths on that upcoming day where there is, like, an ULTRA-important game going on.
You know it well. You also know that a viewing partay is not at all compl-EAT (so much lame puns today) without some chicken wings. Just like the quarterback is the star of the game (is that even a true fact? I just made that up RIGHT NOW) these wings are going to be the star of your shin-dig. Let me just tell you why this statement is TRUF:

- Slow cooker. Remember that reader survey that you took 2 weeks ago? Ya’ll basically yelled THROUGH THE SCREEN, that you wanted more recipes in the slow cooker. So, ummm, here you go.
- Finger food <– HELLO not having to risk poking someone’s eye out when you jump off the couch because someone made a touchdown (is that the right lingo?) and you go all crazy, flailing your fork around.
No Bueno.
- Whole30 stamp of APPROVAL. On chicken wings. And YOUUUU thought that your mouth would have to be devoid of all things sticky, sweet and totally NUM during your 30 day adventure into the land of REAL and WHOLE food.

My peeps. These wings. This SAUCE. This sticky, fruity, sweet sauce that is balanced by that perfect burst of heat when you bite into each juicy, tender wings….AND THEN you get hit with that Asian-food-familiarity of ginger and garlic. Is it wrong that I am sort of just dreaming of sticking my head into the slow cooker and slurping my way out?
Don’t answer that.
You and I need to have a real life, honest chat though. Mostly about the acceptable ways to eat chicken wings, because there really is only one: MESSY.
I want NO part of a world that includes chicken wings where the sauce doesn’t stick to my fingers, drip down my hands and SOMEHOW end up on my forehead after I eat a few of them. I KNOW that YOU feel this way too.

Which is why you are going to BE SO excited when I talk to you about my newest, non-food-related-but-still-related find: Persil® ProClean 2in1!
You’re all like “Yo Taylor, you’re a food blog. Why are you talking to us about laundry detergent?” You know my answer that that?
I am a M-E-S-S. Seriously. Mr. FFF always wonders how my photoshoots end up looking LIKE THIS when I finish them:

Food gets thrown everywhere. Sauces get spilled. The linens I’m using as props get DIRTY. I’ve ruined a few. I’ve even ruined some clothes in the process. It’s basically just chaos x 12.
Now, think of the above photo (which was taken when 1 PERSON was just styling some chicken wings) and then add 20 other, crazy, jumping, cheering, people to it. Like, all the people at the party I know you’re going to throw when you eat these chicken wings.
Real talk: Some person is going to get SO wrapped up in the game that they’re going to wipe their sticky little fingers all over your nice tablecloth. Then someone is going to knock over the sauce. Probably right onto YOUR pants. It’s just part of LIFE.
But, have no fear my party-planning peeps because Persil® ProClean 2in1, umm, WORKS. It’s saved my linens…my clothes…basssically my whole LIFE.
In light of this discovery, you may go forth and eat wings. The only messy thing that you need to worry about is your face.

And how ridiculous it looks being covered with sticky, sauce GOODNESS.
Don’t worry. You’re doing it right.

Sticky Slow Cooker Chicken Wings with Pineapple 5 Spice Sauce {Whole30 + Paleo + Super Simple}
These sticky slow cooker chicken wings are bursting with Asian flavor! You'd never know they're a healthier, paleo and whole30 compliant appetizer!
Ingredients
For the sauce: *
- 2 1/4 Cups Pineapple juice divided, not from concentrate
- 3 Tbsp + 1 tsp Coconut aminos
- 2 Tbsp Garlic minced
- 1 Tbsp + 1 tsp Fresh ginger minced
- 1 tsp Sesame oil
- 1/4 tsp Sea salt
- 2 Tbsp Tapioca flour
For the wings:
- 3 Lbs Chicken wings thawed if frozen
- 2 Tbsp Chinese 5 Spice powder
- 3/4 tsp Red pepper flakes
- Cilantro diced (for garnish)
- Green onion sliced (for garnish)
- Toasted sesame seeds for garnish
Instructions
- In a 5 quart slow cooker, stir together 2 cups of the pineapple juice (reserving the rest for alter) along with the coconut aminos, garlic, ginger, sesame oil and sea salt until well combined,
- In a separate small bowl, whisk together the tapioca flour and the remaining 1/4 cup of pineapple juice until smooth. Stir into the slow cooker with the other sauce ingredients.
- Place the wings down onto a paper towel and place another paper towel on top. Pat the wings until they are as dry as possible.
- Place the wings onto a large plate or cutting board. In a small bowl, mix together the 5 spice and red pepper flakes. Sprinkle half the mixture on the wings evenly, and rub it into each wing. Flip the wings and repeat on the other side with the remaining spices.
- Add the chicken wings into the slow cooker with the sauce and cook on high for 2-3 hours (you want the chicken to no longer be pink inside.)
- Once cooker, line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and place the wings on it in one, flat layer. Turn your oven on to high broil and place the oven rack in the 3rd from the top position.
- Before you begin to broil the wings, pour the sauce from the slow cooker into a large pot and bring to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, boil 3 minutes and stir constantly. Then, reduce the heat to medium and simmer, stirring frequently, until the sauce reduces by half (about 15 minutes) Once reduced, remove from the heat to cool and slightly thicken more.
- While the sauce simmer, it's time to broil the wings.
- Using a basting brush, generously rub some of the simmering sauce over all the wings. Place into the oven and broil for 5 minutes. Remove from the oven, generously baste again, and broil an additional 4-5 minutes until browned and sticky.
- Flip the wings over, generously baste and repeat the process again, making sure to baste half way through cooking time again.
- Once the wings are nice and sticky, garnish with chopped cilantro, green onion, sesame seeds and DEVOUR with the reduced sauce for dipping!
Recipe Notes
*This recipe does make a fair amount of sauce, and you most likely won't use it all. However, I think chicken wings need lots of sauce, so it's better to err on the side of having a little too much than not enough!

Megan @ Skinny Fitalicious says
I can never resist a good garlic and ginger combo! One of the reasons I do not eat wings is because I get them all over myself. I remember going on a date in high school and dropping them on my white pants. So embarrassing!

Haha!! But that just means you’re doing it right girlfriend 😉 Happy weekend!

These look so delicious- I’m considering trying Whole 30 after this baby comes, especially if I get to eat delicious foods like this!
Taylor Kiser says
Thank you Jessy! I’m still not sure I could do it…because I just love oatmeal too much 😉 But, maybe one day!
Kate says
You’d be fine…it’s only 30 days 🙃
Can these be made in the oven? I have a deep burning distaste for slow cookers and InstantPots :ducks:
Taylor Kiser says
Maybe? But I really can’t tell you as recipes are only tested as written -I’m sorry! Let me know if you try!
Cathy | Lemon Tree Dwelling says
I love the flavors in these wings….and GORGEOUS photos!
Taylor Kiser says
Thank you Cathy!
Molly Crosby says
Any suggestions on a different spice to rub the chicken with? I cannot find a Whole30 compliant 5 Spice…they all have detroxe!!
Taylor Kiser says
Unfortunately, no spice is at all like 5 Spice, so I can’t really recommend I’m sorry! But, I use this one: http://amzn.to/21N8CfD! i hope that helps!
Molly Crosby says
Thanks! I will definitely order some, I didn’t even think of that! I made it this last weekend and used Garam Masala (I know completely different) and these wings were still DELICIOUS!My husband loved them too, I will definitely be making them again once my 5 spice arrives!
Taylor Kiser says
Hey I LOVE Garam Masala, so I bet that WAS delish – such a great swap idea!!
But I am SO glad you loved them Molly! Let me know which version you like better! 🙂
Summer Kirby says
Can the coconut Aminos be substituted? I can’t find them in any of the stores around me.
LL says
Coconut aminos is often a sub for soy sauce but then it wouldn’t be whole 30.
I order my aminos online
Belinda says
How hot are they on a 1-10 scale? Low to hot.
Taylor Kiser says
I don’t think very hot at all. 5 Spice isn’t “spicy” in the sense of hot, more like “spicy” flavorful! Maybe a 5 or 6 at most?
LL says
Can the sesame oil be substituted?
Taylor Kiser says
I can’t tell you for sure as recipes are tested only as written – it will definitely change the flavor if you do so!
Anna Wright says
Its a long process.Eventhough it takes more time, its worth for the taste of the dish.Thank you for sharing
Diana says
If I make drumsticks, do I alter the cooking time? Thanks!
Taylor Kiser says
I really can’t tell you as the recipe was not developed that way, and I’ve not cooked drumsticks before – sorry!
Cal says
My girlfriend and I just cooked this recipe thinking we would have enough for leftovers. It was so delicious we couldn’t stop eating! For us the chicken only took about two hours in the slow cooker. Thank you for sharing this, we can’t wait to make it again!
Taylor Kiser says
Oh wow – your slow cooker must ROCK! I am SO happy you loved! Thanks for letting me know!
Annie says
I’m trying the whole 30 starting next week…is tapioca flour specifically required or could I use almond flour for example ?
Taylor Kiser says
Tapioca flour definitely. Almond flour doesn’t thicken like tapioca. Sorry!
AmandaH says
Have you ever tried this recipe with chicken thighs? I really don’t like chicken wings, but the ingredients sound great.
Taylor Kiser says
I can’t say that I have – sorry!
Ash says
These look amazing! Do you think I could replicate this for drumsticks? Thanks!
Taylor Kiser says
I really can’t tell you as the recipe wasn’t tested as such – sorry! PROBABLY, but I can’t tell you about cooking time etc.
Robin says
For anyone else who wants to try, I subbed in some chicken thighs to make it more dinner and kid friendly and this worked great! I cooked mine for about 3 hours and did everything else as directed. They melted off the bone and the kids asked for seconds, they were awesome. Thanks so much for a yummy and super easy dinner.
Taylor Kiser says
WOO HOO! So glad you loved them and thank you for letting everyone know about the thighs -SO helpful!!! <3
Kristy says
Finished making these at about 9:00 pm tonight. Told myself I would just eat one to see how they tasted. Proceeded to eat 3 more, at which point husband told me OMG STOP EATING WINGS IT’S LATE. Couldn’t help it, these are amazing!
Taylor Kiser says
HAHAHA well I consider my work done yet! 😉 So glad you loved!
Natasha says
I decided to use fresh pineapple juice. I used my Omega juicer. I’m not sure if my fresh pineapple wasn’t as sweet as canned pineapple juice or what but the sauce was nasty:( I’m giving the recipe 2 stars based on me using fresh juice.
Taylor Kiser says
Hi Natasha! I am sorry you didn’t love them. But, I reallly think it was the juice – as you can read from other reviews people usually love these!
JJ says
Is this recipe right as written? 2 Tbsp of 5 spice is a lot. I’m using 4 lbs of chicken wings and I’ve probably only used 1 Tbsp. Will circle back with a review after they’re done.
Taylor Kiser says
Hi JJ – yes, it’s correct. I’ve had many people make it as written and love it! Let me know what you think!
Morgan Ramsdell says
This sounds excellent! Thoughts on making this in an instant pot?
Taylor Kiser says
To be honest, I don’t do a lot of IP cooking so I can’t really tell you! I am sure it would work, I just don’t know the steps to take to make it happen! But, let us know if you try it!
Tomi L. Duren says
I’m sorry to leave a bad review. But these were tasteless and unappetizing. Won’t be a second try here in this house. 👎🏻
Taylor Kiser says
I am sorry you didn’t like them! Many readers have, but we all have different taste buds 🙂
Skip Poulsen says
Just started Whole30 2 days ago and was looking for something sweet and there you were. I’m single so I made a half order (6 full wings). OMG I made them in my Instant Pot (25 minutes @ high pressure, everything else as stated in your recipe instructions) and they turned out GREAT!! Will definitely make these again.
Taylor Kiser says
WOO HOO! I am SO glad you loved them! And thank you for the instant pot tip – that will help so many people! 🙂
