Craving something decadent for breakfast? Topped and infused with Nutella, these waffles are a chocolate lover’s dream come true.

Nutella waffles on a plate, drizzled with chocolate, topped with sliced strawberries and whipped cream.

As a preteen, I was obsessed with Nutella hazelnut chocolate spread. Almost every day, I ate it on toast in the morning and with crackers as a snack in the afternoon. But one recipe that I only found in adulthood is Nutella waffles—a fluffy and luxurious way to get your chocolate fix first thing in the morning. Although they’re not a health-conscious treat by any means, they’re definitely delicious enough for special occasions like anniversaries or birthdays.

In this recipe, melted Nutella is stirred into vanilla waffle batter so that each waffle comes out scrumptiously fudgy. Then, the stack is topped with more Nutella, plus your favorite regulars like maple syrup, strawberries, or whipped cream. For teenagers, this is a perfect post-sleepover treat, but for adults, it could be a sweet romantic gesture on the morning of a big day. I can’t imagine there are folks out there who wouldn’t be impressed by such a yummy brunch, especially if they enjoy Nutella as much as I do.

Even though Nutella waffles look and taste incredible, they’re easier to make than cake. Find out for yourself…this recipe only takes 20 minutes, and you’ll be happily surprised by how simple each step is.

Ingredients for Nutella Waffles: fresh strawberries, eggs, all-purpose flour, Nutella, milk, melted butter, and whipped cream.

Want to take it a step further? Kick the cocoa level up a notch by adding a scattering of unsweetened chocolate chips to the batter. These will melt along with the Nutella and provide even more bursts of chocolate. Alternatively, you can add a couple tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder to the batter. Simply mix it into the dry ingredients in the first step. As you can see, there are plenty of ways to amplify the chocolate factor in your Nutella waffles.

How do I store leftovers?

Once cooled to room temperature, Nutella waffles can be wrapped in plastic wrap or placed in an airtight container. Refrigerate them (without toppings) for up to 24 hours. For longer storage, pop them in a freezer-safe bag and freeze for up to 1 month. Then you can either heat them up in a toaster oven, or let them thaw in the fridge overnight before warming them up in the oven at 350°F for 5 to 7 minutes.

Serving suggestions

How else can you jazz up Nutella waffles? Well, regardless of whether you’re serving them for breakfast, brunch, or dessert, they go great with sliced bananas and maple syrup. But you can alternatively top them with Chocolate-Covered Strawberries or Strawberry Whipped Cream. For a creamy complement, serve them with scoops of Sugar-Free Frozen Yogurt or Healthy Ice Cream. Personally, I like to pair these with a savory side like Jammy Eggs or Air-Fryer Breakfast Potatoes for a salty-sweet brunch combo.

  • Preheat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Lightly grease it with non-stick spray or a brush of melted butter. Pour the appropriate amount of batter into the iron, then add extra Nutella by drizzling it on top and swirling with a spoon.
  • Close the iron and cook the waffle until golden brown and crisp, about 4-5 minutes. Remove waffle and repeat with the remaining batter.
  • Allow waffles to rest for 1-2 minutes. Serve warm with additional Nutella drizzled on top. Optional toppings include fresh strawberries or a dollop of whipped cream.
