In just a few simple steps, you can enjoy this succulent and savory Beef Teriyaki dish that’s better than anything you’ll find in a restaurant.

In Japanese cuisine, chicken is the most commonly used protein served with teriyaki sauce, but that doesn’t mean you can’t switch it up and use beef! With the right mixture of ingredients, you can create a homemade beef teriyaki dish that will blow away any teriyaki-based meal you’ve had in a restaurant. Don’t believe me? Find out for yourself after trying this mouth-watering dish you’ll make time and time again.

The key to any great teriyaki sauce is using a combination of soy sauce, honey, mirin, and brown sugar. This mixture creates a thick sauce that’s both parts sweet and savory. Talk about YUM! The tender beef is cooked with aromatics like ginger and garlic that add depth to the flavor profile and help maintain a good balance between the sweet and savory sauce. The thin slices of flank steak always come out perfectly tender and soak up the teriyaki sauce just right, so every bite you take will explode with flavor.

Is Beef Teriyaki Healthy?

Because the teriyaki sauce uses brown sugar, this dish isn’t exactly the healthiest meal on the planet, however, you can always swap ingredients out for healthier alternatives. If you’re trying to cut down on your sugar intake, consider leaving the honey out or reducing the amount of brown sugar you use. Likewise, if you’re on a low-sodium diet, make sure you use low-sodium soy sauce to make the teriyaki sauce. On the bright side, flank steak is a lean cut of meat that provides a good dose of protein and is relatively low in fat.

Veggies Optional But Encouraged

One thing you can do to make this dish more nutritious is to include more vegetables! While of course you can make a vegetable side dish, I recommend cooking extra vegetables alongside the beef so that they get covered with the star of the show: the teriyaki sauce. This way, every part of the meal will be covered in that addicting sauce. Broccoli and bell peppers are the most common vegetables to combine with beef teriyaki, but depending on your tastes, you could also use carrots, snow peas, bok choy, or asparagus. If you prefer a sweeter teriyaki dish, consider adding slices of pineapple and a dash of pineapple juice to the pan. That sounds like heaven to me!

Ingredients for beef teriyaki: sliced beef, ginger, garlic, green onions, cornstarch, soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil.

How do I store leftovers?

You can store your leftover beef teriyaki in an airtight container in the fridge. Your leftovers will remain ok to eat for 4-5 days and can be reheated in the microwave in just 1 to 2 minutes.

Serving Suggestions

It’s typically best to serve beef teriyaki over a bed of Steamed Rice. But if you prefer, you can also use Brown Rice Pilaf, Vegetable Fried Rice, or Quinoa with Roasted Vegetables. As mentioned, mixing beef teriyaki with vegetables is also a good idea. However, if you don’t want to put your veggies in the pan with the meat, I would suggest a side of Steamed Broccoli or perhaps Easy Sautéed Broccoli.

Meanwhile, if you like this teriyaki recipe, feel free to try some other delicious dishes. I would suggest starting with Teriyaki Chicken or Teriyaki Chicken Stir-Fry. You may also be interested in these recipes for Teriyaki Chicken Wings or Hawaiian Teriyaki Chicken.
