Crispy on the outside, these tender Air Fryer Chicken Drumsticks pack plenty of flavor, minus the fat!

What is it with kids and drumsticks? All three of my not-so-littles love them. What’s weird is that they’re not really into dark meat—unless they’re drumsticks. I suppose it’s the novelty of it all. Holding that leg in your hand feels tribal, like we’re cavemen again, and I’m Fred Flintstone coming home with the kill. Whatever gets my kids to eat, right? Needless to say, air fryer chicken drumsticks are a popular weekday pick in my household. They’re foolproof and quick to make, so they’re also great for casual get-togethers like game days!
Chicken drumsticks have been a family favorite for years, but ever since I bought an air fryer they’re a mainstay. While I love deep-fried food as much as the next guy, I’m perfectly fine with leaving oil splatters and greasy cleanups to the restaurants. With an air fryer, I come pretty darn close to getting the crispiness and juiciness minus the excess fat. These days, it’s my go-to way for “frying” up drumsticks, and I haven’t heard any complaints from my most vocal critics—the kiddos.
This particular air fryer recipe isn’t going for KFC-style chicken. Instead of using breading, I rely on the drumstick’s skin along with common household spices like paprika, Italian seasoning, garlic, and onion powder. The air fryer will do the rest of the work, getting that skin nice and crispy. Pair these with your favorite dipping sauces, like this White BBQ Sauce, and you’re good to go!
Are Air Fryer Chicken Drumsticks Healthy?
Compared to traditionally fried chicken, I’d say yes, these drumsticks are healthy! Using the air fryer lowers the caloric count by a bit. Best of all, you’re not sacrificing flavor. Nutrition-wise, chicken drumsticks are an excellent source of protein. Even though the skin contains some unsaturated fat, it is also a source of saturated fat, so enjoy these drumsticks in moderation!

Don’t Like the Skin? Take it Off!
Sometimes, I’ll cook for a friend or family member who’s not a fan of chicken skin. Heck, I’m not always in the mood for it either. Well, I’m pleased to say that you can easily remove the skin without sacrificing much flavor. Drumsticks contain plenty of natural fats and connective tissues, which keep the meat juicy and tender, even in high heat.
However, I’d still recommend brushing the skinless drumsticks with olive oil or even a cooking spray. That way, you’ll still get a (slightly) crispy exterior without the skin. Your picky friends will love it!

How to make ahead and store
I think these drumsticks taste best freshly “fried.” However, you can season the drumsticks ahead, one day before air frying. Leftover cooked drumsticks can be stored in your fridge for around 3-5 days. To reheat, just pop them back in the air fryer at 350°F until they get crispy.

Serving Suggestions
Air fryer chicken drumsticks go with anything. Since I usually make them for my kids, I’ll whip up some Bacon Mac And Cheese, or these Steak Fries. OK, those aren’t the healthiest sides. But you know what? Roasted Veggies and Mashed Potatoes are just as tasty and relatively guilt-free. And don’t forget to add your favorite dipping sauces like Homemade Peppercorn Ranch Dressing, Kansas City BBQ Sauce, or Easy Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce!
