Forget the store-bought stuff—after one scoop of this rich and creamy Onion Dip, you’ll never go back!

Whether you’re enjoying them with crisp vegetables or chips, dips make for the perfect snack. After all, game days and get-togethers are always better when you serve up a delicious dip. And this onion dip recipe is definitely worth the calories.
Onion dip has existed in some form or another since the mid-1950s. Someone had the brilliant idea of combining sour cream with an onion soup mix. Needless to say, this serendipitous discovery became a snack-time sensation!
Since that initial discovery, I’d argue that we’ve nearly perfected the art of homemade dip. It’s not quite as simple as combining sour cream and soup mix anymore. However, it’s still easy enough to make without much complication. All you have to do is caramelize some onions and mix them with a few other ingredients.
Unlike store-bought dips, you’ll know exactly what’s in the dip because you’re the one making it. Oh, and did I mention that it’s also creamy, tangy, and packed with flavor? That’s another reason to give homemade onion dip a try!
Is This Onion Dip Healthy?
For one thing, this onion dip is certainly more wholesome than what you’ll find in stores. You don’t need to worry about excess sodium, artificial ingredients, or preservatives. The downside is that there’s a decent amount of saturated fat per serving. If you’re concerned about the calorie count, use a low-fat cream cheese instead—and as always, enjoy in moderation.

Take Your Time
Making a good dip can’t be rushed. The biggest key to making this recipe the right way is caramelizing the onions. When you do this, keep the heat relatively low so that the onions gradually caramelize. This will help to bring out more flavor. It’s also best to let the onions cool before adding them to the mixture. In fact, you may consider giving the dip more time to sit in the fridge before serving. The dip’s flavor deepens the longer it rests, so making this dip a day or two ahead is a good idea!

How do I store leftovers?
Store the onion dip in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. And like I said earlier, prepping this dip ahead actually enhances the taste!

Serving Suggestions
After making your onion dip, you’ll need something to dip in it. In addition to raw vegetables, I’d recommend Homemade Potato Chips or Air-Fryer Potato Chips. We also have a recipe for Ranch Pretzels or Flaxseed Crackers that are perfect for onion dip. You can even try making Homemade Ritz Crackers and seeing how they taste with this recipe, too!
