Make a sweet and sour sauce that has a nearly endless list of uses!

Good cooking often comes down to using the right ingredients. But sometimes, it’s also about finding the right condiment for your dish! The right sauce, glaze, or marinade can make a meal infinitely better.

For those who are fans of condiments, this mumbo sauce is something you should have in your culinary toolbox. It can be made in about ten minutes with ingredients most people already have in their pantry. More importantly, the sauce strikes the right balance between sweet and spicy, walking that tightrope to flavor perfection. Mumbo sauce has a little bit of tang, a little bit of sweetness, and a little bit of spice.

The other reason I love it is because it can be used on just about anything. It’s often used for chicken wings, but it has countless other uses; it’s a great dipping sauce, it can add a little kick to a burger or a sandwich, and it’s a great glaze for ribs, fried chicken, and tofu. In short, if you’re making something that can be enhanced with a sauce or marinade, mumbo sauce is an option worth considering.

Is Mumbo Sauce Healthy?

Since it’s just a condiment, mumbo sauce shouldn’t have a huge impact on the nutritional value of a meal. Of course, keep in mind that there is a little sugar in the recipe, as well as soy sauce, which tends to be high in sodium. If limiting your intake of either sugar or sodium is a point of emphasis, mumbo sauce may not be a good idea. Otherwise, mumbo sauce has no serious health concerns while also being suitable for dairy-free diets. To make the recipe gluten-free, just swap the soy sauce for coconut aminos.

Ingredients for Mumbo Sauce: granulated sugar, ketchup, distilled white vinegar, hot sauce, smoked paprika, soy sauce, and honey.

Little Adjustments

There are always little adjustments you can make to mumbo sauce to suit your personal taste. For instance, you can adjust the spiciness of the sauce by adding more or less hot sauce and paprika. Depending on if you want more or less tang, you can adjust the amount of white vinegar. If you want the sauce to be a little sweeter, just add a little more honey.

It’s also possible to add a little more depth and flavor to the sauce by including grated garlic or ginger. Finally, if the sauce is too thick, gradually add a little water until you get the right consistency. You can also let the sauce simmer on low heat for a little longer if you prefer a thicker sauce.

How to make ahead and store

Allow the mumbo sauce to cool before storing it in an airtight container. In the fridge, the sauce should stay good for up to 2 weeks. However, I recommend taking it out of the fridge and bringing it to room temperature before serving.

Serving Suggestions

If you’re looking for the perfect dish to use with mumbo sauce, my first suggestion would be some Grilled Chicken Wings or perhaps some Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Wings. I would also recommend slathering it on a Grilled Chicken Breast or using it as a glaze when making Baby Back Ribs in the Oven. Finally, mumbo sauce can be great to use as a dipping sauce with a variety of items, including Air Fryer Shrimp, Keto French Fries, Air Fryer Onion Rings, and Crispy Air Fryer Egg Rolls.
