Get perfectly Poached Eggs In The Microwave with no whirlpool, no vinegar water, and no fuss!

If you’ve ever been to a brunch spot in South Africa, you’ll know that they care about their eggs in this part of the world. The first time, I was asked, “How would you like your poached eggs?” I drew a blank, and simply answered, “…cooked?”
Not my finest moment. But here, the consistency is everything. Soft, medium, or hard poached eggs are all very common, and the chefs will cook them exactly to your liking. Their obsession with perfectly poached eggs quickly spilled over into my own kitchen, and I would spend most mornings as a student trying to perfect the poached egg.
While I secretly love the mindful frustration of trying to get eggs to poach (a similar feeling to attempting to pull perfect espresso shots from a semi-automatic machine), I will always take the opportunity to learn how to get them made more consistently and effectively!
That’s why this recipe is such a godsend. While some may frown on the use of the microwave for anything beyond reheating, I think this is a fantastic, foolproof method for egg preparation. This method combines ease and precision, so you can enjoy perfectly cooked eggs without the guesswork.

Are Poached Eggs Healthy?
Yep, you bet they are. Not only do eggs provide you with protein and all nine essential amino acids, they will keep you satiated all morning. Yes, they do contain dietary cholesterol, but studies have shown that for most healthy people, eating eggs does not significantly raise blood cholesterol levels.
Plus, as we’re not cooking our eggs in any fat for this recipe, this is probably one of the healthiest ways you consume them. Eggs fit a number of diets, including vegetarian, Paleo, keto, gluten-free, Whole30, and low-carb.

Not All Eggs Are Created Equal!
Choosing the right eggs is key to achieving perfectly poached eggs. Always opt for the freshest eggs you can find, as the whites of older eggs tend to spread out more in the water, making it harder to achieve that neat, compact shape. Look for eggs with firm, uncracked shells and check the expiration date as a guide, though local farm-fresh eggs are often an unbeatable choice for quality.
The color of the yolk—whether light yellow, soft orange, or even rich orange-red—doesn’t affect the poaching outcome; it’s more about the way the hen has been raised. The flavor and texture can benefit from choosing eggs labeled as free-range or organic, as these typically come from hens with a more varied diet and better living conditions.

How To Make Ahead And Store
Poached eggs can be stored in a bowl of water in the fridge for up to 3 days. To reheat them, place them in a pot of hot water and cover with a lid. After 3 minutes, the eggs should be warm and ready to eat.
Serving Suggestions
I am truly an egg fiend, and I’m always finding ways to sneak more protein into my meals! For breakfasts, you can never go wrong with Avocado Toast and poached eggs, with a portion of Turkey Bacon on the side. These poached eggs also massively simplify Eggs Benedict, so you have more time to focus on nailing that pesky Hollandaise Sauce!
For dinners, I’m always throwing an extra poached egg on top of my Mediterranean Bowl for extra nutrients, and my ultimate comfort meal will always be a Steak With Garlic Butter Mushrooms, a bowl of fresh Sushi Rice, and a poached egg on top!

Ingredients
- 1/2 to 1 cup cold water

- Sea salt to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper to taste
