These Homemade Hot Pockets will bring back all that childhood nostalgia, without the freezer-aisle reputation!

Homemade Hot Pockets

Does anyone remember Hot Pockets? Man, I used to be obsessed with those things as a kid! I would eat them as a snack after school, as a pick-me-up between Saturday soccer games, at sleepovers with friends—you name it! There was even a breakfast version with eggs, cheese, and sausage that I’d grab before leaving for school when I was running late. Hot pockets were my jam.

Lately, I’ve been feeling nostalgic about all the amazing and fun foods we enjoyed as kids, and I’ve been wondering if I could make homemade versions. I mean, why not, right? These homemade hot pockets are perfect as a grab-and-go snack or even a full lunch for kids when served with fresh fruit or another healthy side. If I could recreate all my favorite childhood foods, I’d be living the dream.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. One recipe at a time. These hot pockets are super easy to make, surprisingly fast to assemble, and require the basic ingredients for your average homemade pizza: mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, pizza dough, and sauce! Brush your dough with a bit of egg before baking and voilà! Cheesy, savory, and tasty hot pockets are back! And, just in case your brain blocked out this memory too, please let them cool off before you take a big bite; the roof of your mouth will thank you.

Are Homemade Hot Pockets Healthy?

Homemade hot pockets are probably healthier than the real freezer-aisle staple because this version lacks any additional preservatives and oils. That being said, we’re talking about wrapping cheese, pepperoni, and pizza sauce in pizza dough, so it’s about as healthy as a homemade pizza. That means this homemade Hot Pocket is high in carbs and calories, lacks vegetables, and has very little fiber in it. I’d call this an indulgent snack that’s great on occasion.

But—because you’re making it at home, you can make it as organic, preservative-free, and otherwise healthy as you want it! Trade the pepperoni for the kind made with turkey, or use uncured pepperoni; swap the mozzarella out for vegan cheese; make your own pizza sauce. Or make it a chicken, turkey bacon, and arugula hot pocket with vegan cheese for a far healthier snack. You can even make this gluten-free if you can find (or make your own) gluten-free pizza dough!

It’s All In The Dough

What makes these homemade hot pockets special is that they don’t just taste like the classic snack we all remember from the freezer aisle—they look like them, too! Part of the appeal of Hot Pockets for me was the iconic style, and the secret to recreating that look is all in the dough.

When it comes to ready-made pizza dough, there are plenty of options. You can find traditional dough made from wheat flour, water, yeast, and salt, which is ideal for those seeking a classic pizza crust. Some doughs include olive oil for added flavor and richness. Whole-wheat and gluten-free options are also available, or you can make your own. This regular Pizza Dough Recipe is delicious, as is this No-Yeast Pizza Dough. And gluten-free eaters can try this Gluten-Free Pizza Dough Recipe.

While some ready-made pizza doughs are refrigerated or frozen and just need to be rolled out and baked, others come as a mix that requires adding water. Remember that frozen varieties will need to thaw before use.

How Do I Store Leftovers?

Allow the hot pockets to cool completely before storing them in an airtight container or Ziploc bag. They will keep in the fridge for up to 4 days. They freeze well, too! Just transfer them to a freezer-safe Ziploc bag and freeze ’em for up to 3 months. Reheat at 350°F until crispy to enjoy your leftovers.

Serving Suggestions

These homemade hot pockets taste very similar to pizza and are a great appetizer! Serve them with this Sour Cream Dip for parties, gatherings, or just an afternoon snack. I also love a classic Tomato Sauce to dip these in! To add something healthier on the side, this wonderful, fresh Green Goddess Salad is also a great accompaniment to the dish.
