When it comes to preparing food, I’ve always been more about taste than presentation. However, there are always exceptions to this rule, and fruit kabobs are definitely one of them. It’s simple enough to put pieces of fruit onto a skewer, but you can definitely elevate it to food art by arranging it in a specific design or pattern. There isn’t necessarily any cooking that needs to be done with fruit kabobs, so why not make the presentation super creative?

Making fruit kabobs is a fun way to spice up a boring afternoon or a festive activity to do on a holiday or special occasion. For people who need to keep kids entertained, it can be a great project to assign them. Plus, making fruit kabobs is a good way to get kids (and adults) to eat more fruit. Naturally, you can choose the specific types of fruits that you like to eat or opt for ones that have the most vibrant colors. There is no right or wrong way to put together fruit kabobs, as long as you have fun doing it.

Since dipping sauces are all part of the experience, make sure you have something on hand to serve with your fruit kabobs. Aside from Greek yogurt or whipped cream, Chia Seeds in Yogurt would be an excellent dip. I would also recommend making Strawberry Whipped Cream, which is a truly tasty topping.

Are Fruit Kabobs Healthy?

A big part of their appeal is that fruit kabobs are a healthy option as a snack or dessert. Most fruits are high in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. The exact vitamins and minerals in each type of fruit varies, but it’s safe to say that fruit kabobs have a lot of nutritional value.

What Are The Best Types of Fruits To Use?

As mentioned, you can choose whichever fruits you’d like to include on your kabob, if you don’t want to follow the recipe exactly. However, it’s usually a good idea to stay away from fruits like bananas or apples that might turn brown soon after you pierce their skin. For these types of fruits, try adding them to the skewer just before serving. Likewise, fruits that are too soft or ripe might be harder to keep on the skewer. Finally, make sure you are putting more dense fruits like pineapple or melon at the bottom of the skewer. This will help support the weight of the other fruits and prevent them from sliding down and off the skewer.

How to make ahead and store

Fruit kabobs can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Just make sure there aren’t any fruits that brown quickly and cover the fruit kabobs in plastic wrap. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.

Serving Suggestions

In addition to yogurt and whipped cream, I find that pudding is an excellent complement for fruit kabobs. Since it’s hard to put bananas on skewers, I would recommend making the Perfect Banana Pudding to go with them. You could also opt for a more traditional Vanilla Pudding or Chocolate Pudding.

If you’re a big fan of fruit-based snacks and desserts, some other recipes I would recommend include Fruit Soup and Watermelon Fruit Salad.

Ingredients

  • 12 medium strawberries hulled
  • 12 blackberries or mulberries
  • 12 pineapple chunks
  • 12 cantaloupe chunks
  • 12 kiwi pieces
  • 12 large purple grapes
  • 12 large wooden skewers
  • Yogurt or whipped cream for serving

Instructions

  • Thread the fruits onto the skewers in a colorful pattern, making sure to leave enough empty space at the base to hold the skewer. Pierce the fruits in their centers to ensure they don't fall off.
