Humble ground turkey is transformed into a firecracker of a dish with this flavorful recipe, which combines both heat and sweetness.

I’ve started eating a lot more ground turkey lately as part of my quest to improve my overall health and reduce my consumption of red meat. We all know that ground turkey can be tasteless and dry. That’s why we need great recipes that are packed with flavor yet easy to make. This recipe for firecracker ground turkey is one such dish that you and your family are sure to love.
Don’t worry if you’re not a lover of spicy foods. You can regulate the amount of heat by adjusting the sriracha and red pepper flakes. Pairing this savory, sweet, and tangy dish with white rice helps to minimize the heat. It’s such a versatile dish that you can serve it with noodles, vegetables (I like zoodles, aka zucchini noodles), or in lettuce wraps (my other favorite way to enjoy ground turkey). Another fun option is to top those puffed, crisp rice crackers with the meat mixture for an Asian take on nachos.
Aside from garnishing this dish with thinly sliced green onions, you can also sprinkle on some sesame seeds, furikake (a spice blend of dried seaweed, salt, spices, and toasted sesame seeds), chili crunch (a crunchy, spicy chili flake-packed oil), or crispy fried onion bits.
This recipe works equally well with ground chicken, ground beef, ground pork, or ground lamb. Vegetarians and vegans can easily substitute their favorite plant-based crumbles or tofu for the protein in this recipe. Feel free to add your choice of vegetables to this recipe with the ground turkey. Chopped mushrooms are my favorite addition, but you can also use chopped broccoli, carrots, zucchini, or yellow squash. If adding a large amount of vegetables, I recommend increasing the sauce.

Simple substitutions that work
We’ve all been there—that moment when you realize you’re missing one ingredient but don’t want to have to run out to the store. Here are some simple ingredient swaps you can make for this recipe. If you don’t have any chili oil, you can substitute additional olive oil or even sesame oil, which will provide a slightly nutty flavor. Toasted sesame oil has a stronger flavor profile, but both that and untoasted sesame oil will work fine in this recipe. Avocado oil can also be used as a substitute for olive oil and chili oil.
If you don’t have, or don’t use, brown sugar (like me), you can substitute coconut sugar, maple sugar, maple syrup, or honey. White sugar will also work, but keep in mind that each change will slightly alter the flavor. You can use apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar as an alternative to rice vinegar, but you may need to adjust the sweetener slightly, as these vinegars are not as sweet-tasting as rice vinegar. Lime or lemon juice can also be used as a substitute in a pinch.
An equal amount of tamari, coconut aminos, or gluten-free soy sauce can be used as a replacement for low-sodium soy sauce. I recommend keeping low-sodium varieties on hand whenever possible. Any hot sauce can replace the sriracha, and, if necessary, you can use a quarter teaspoon of ground ginger instead of the fresh.

How do I store leftovers?
Allow leftover firecracker ground turkey to cool (don’t keep it out for more than 2 hours), and then store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. It can also be frozen in a freezer-safe container or zippered bag for up to 3 months. I like to freeze it in individual portions for quick and easy meals. Defrost the frozen leftovers overnight in the refrigerator and reheat them on the stove or in the microwave.
