Create a party-friendly DIY feast with a Baked Potato Bar!

Baked Potato Bar

I love the conviviality of gathering with friends and family to share a meal, especially when it’s practically made for enjoying together. Mezze, cheese and charcuterie boards, tapas, and DIY food bars come to mind. Personally, I’m a huge fan of baked potato bars. They offer a delicious way to get creative and give everyone the chance to experiment with different flavor combos, mixing and matching ingredients to suit their tastes and dietary preferences. If you’re looking for an easy dinner for family get-togethers and casual hangouts, a baked potato bar is the way to go. All you have to do is bake the potatoes, prep the toppings, and voilà! You’ve got a simple, convivial meal that everyone will love.

This baked potato bar recipe calls for an assortment of classics—everything from crispy bacon to sautéed mushrooms. But feel free to customize the ingredients to your liking or based on what you have available. And why not ask guests to bring their favorite toppings? Because when it comes to baked potato bars, you can never have enough!

Is a Baked Potato Bar Healthy?

While potatoes are sometimes judged harshly for being a “lesser vegetable,” they’re a good source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. In this recipe, the fact that they’re baked instead of fried is also a win. Additionally, because you get to pick your toppings, you have full control of just how healthy it will be.

Sweeten the “DIY” Deal

Sometimes, I like to swap regular potatoes with sweet potatoes for an extra boost of nutrition and fiber. This also changes the kind of toppings I’d pick. You could go the classic bacon bits route for a salty-sweet combo, or sprinkle the potatoes with roasted walnuts or pecans. Yogurt or coconut cream are also delicious alternatives to sour cream. Whipped cream and mini chocolate chips are another option if you want to have a sweet potato for dessert. Whatever you decide, have fun with it! This recipe is ripe with possibilities and new experiments.

How to Make Ahead and Store

This recipe is very easy to make ahead. All you need to do is bake the potatoes and place them in an airtight container in the fridge. Store each topping separately to maintain its freshness and prevent mushiness. I also recommend serving the potatoes within a day or two to ensure maximum freshness. Leftovers can be stored in fridge-safe containers for up to 3 days. To reheat, bake in the oven at 350°F for 10-15 minutes.

Serving Suggestions

Aside from topping suggestions (which are practically endless), there are some pretty sweet sides to pair with your bountiful baked potato bar. For a gluten-free twist on a classic, try zucchini noodle mac and cheese. And why not add a selection of sauces? Dill Sauce, Cheese Sauce, and Hollandaise Sauce are all great on baked potatoes. Evoking a perfect picnic vibe, Macaroni Salad is another great option that kids especially love. Feel free to replace regular macaroni with gluten-free if you need to.

Total: 1 hour hour 20 minutes minutes

Ingredients

  • 4 Potatoes russet, sweet, or white
  • 2 tablespoon Cooking oil
  • Salt & pepper
  • 4 tablespoon Salted butter
  • 1 cup Sour cream
  • 1 cup Cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup Feta cheese
  • 1/4 cup Fresh chives
  • 1 cup Sliced mushrooms

  • 1 cup Cherry tomatoes
  • 1 Avocado
  • 1 cup Chili

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Wash the potatoes thoroughly and pat them dry.
  • Pierce the potatoes with a fork several times. This allows steam to escape during baking.
  • Rub the potatoes with cooking oil, then season generously with salt and pepper.
  • Place the potatoes on a baking sheet and bake for 45-60 minutes, or until they are tender when pierced with a fork.

  • While the potatoes are baking, prepare your toppings: slice the butter, grate the cheese, chop the chives, sauté the mushrooms, cook and crumble the bacon, halve the tomatoes, slice the avocado, and heat the chili.
