You’ll soon forget takeout when you discover how easy it is to make your own Asian Rice!

So many great meals out there can be made even better with a side of rice. But you don’t need to settle for a bland dish of plain white rice—who wants that? Especially when authentic Asian rice can be made quickly. All you need are just a few ingredients, probably already stocked in your kitchen.
I’m guessing that you’ve probably ordered Chinese takeout before, right? Well, if you have, you know most of the mains often come with a side of rice. If you have takeout joints like the ones by my house, you can upgrade to fried rice, which is what I usually do. This recipe is like a less greasy version of that takeout classic.
A little soy sauce, sesame oil, and green onions are all that separate you from traditional white rice and bona fide Asian rice. It really doesn’t take much to turn this plain grain into a savory side. If you’re making a main course that needs something extra, don’t hesitate to pull out this recipe.
Is This Asian Rice Healthy?
The jasmine rice used is a good source of carbohydrates. Also, as long as you use low-sodium soy sauce, you should be able to curb the amount of salt. Plus, in addition to green onions, you’re free to add other vegetables. And why stop there? Opt for brown jasmine rice instead to boost the fiber and complex carbs!

How To Get Fluffy Asian Rice
The difference between meh rice and amazing rice often comes down to one simple step—rinsing! Like many other varieties, Jasmine rice harbors loads of excess starch. If you don’t rinse your rice, that excess starch turns this humble grain into a clumpy, sticky mess. That’s why I always rinse my rice under cold water. Once the water runs clear, you’ll have removed the starch.
Another tip is to let the rice soak for 15-30 minutes. Soaking adds moisture, enhancing the texture and allows the grains to cook more evenly. So, if you have a spare half-hour, it’s definitely worth the extra step!

How Do I Store Leftovers?
If you have any leftover Asian rice, store it in the fridge in an airtight container. It should stay fresh for about 3 days and can be heated in the microwave.

Serving Suggestions
Asian rice is the perfect pairing for a wide variety of meals, including this Teriyaki Chicken Stir-Fry or a Beef Stir-Fry. Personally, I like to pretend I’m ordering takeout, so I’ll make this Orange Chicken Recipe to get the full effect. I’ll also whip up some Air-Fryer Wontons and Chicken Egg Rolls, because you gotta have some sides!

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups jasmine rice
- 3 cups water
- 1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 2 green onions thinly sliced
Instructions
- Rinse the jasmine rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch, which helps in making the rice fluffy.

- In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed rice and water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 18 minutes, or until the water is absorbed and the rice is tender.

- Remove the saucepan from heat. Drizzle the soy sauce and sesame oil over the cooked rice, add the kosher salt, and fluff with a fork to mix the seasonings evenly throughout the rice.

- Garnish the Asian rice with thinly sliced green onions before serving.
