This versatile Quinoa Rice will complement a wide variety of meals.

Decisions, decisions! Many of us regularly ask ourselves what side dishes to serve with dinner. For me at least, the choice is frequently between potatoes, rice, pasta, and quinoa. Adding a vegetable or two on the side helps round out a complete meal when combined with a flavorful entrée. But what if you could increase the nutritional value and flavor of your side dish? When you prepare a pot of this quinoa rice, that’s exactly what you get!

This recipe combines quinoa and rice together in one pot, adding a slightly nuttier taste to a conventional rice side. The unique flavors and textures of these two popular sides work well together and lend a special touch to any meal. This quinoa rice recipe also takes under 30 minutes to prepare, making it an excellent addition to a last-minute weeknight dinner.

Looking for a quick and easy side dish recipe that complements a wide range of entrées? Then you’re in luck—this quinoa rice recipe may be just what you need for your next family dinner or work potluck. Give this dish a try today, and enjoy a side dish that’s equal parts familiar and innovative!

Ingredients for quinoa rice: long-grain rice, quinoa, water, and salt.

Exploring the different varieties of quinoa

There are three main types of quinoa—red, white, and black. Each of these varieties has a similar nutritional profile, but the texture and taste of each type do tend to vary slightly. Red quinoa is known for its firmer texture and nuttier flavor. White quinoa has a softer texture and is known for its milder taste. Black quinoa is crunchier, holds its shape the best during cooking, and has an earthy, slightly molasses-like flavor. You can experiment with using different types of quinoa in this recipe until you determine which variety works best for you. I also recommend trying tricolor quinoa so you can enjoy a combination of all three varieties.

How do I store leftovers?

Let your cooked quinoa rice come to room temperature, then refrigerate it for up to 4 days in an airtight container. You can also freeze your leftovers in freezer bags or airtight containers for up to 3 months. If you choose to freeze your quinoa rice, I recommend allowing it to defrost overnight in the fridge before reheating. You can reheat your leftovers on the stove or in the microwave, although keep in mind that microwaving your quinoa rice may slightly alter the texture.

Serving suggestions

Serve quinoa rice with dishes such as Massaman Curry (one of my favorites), Ground Chicken Stir-Fry, or these tasty Spanish Meatballs. And in my opinion, this Egg Foo Young Gravy is as delicious over quinoa rice as it is on a Chinese omelet. In many recipes, quinoa can easily be substituted for rice. You could also try incorporating quinoa rice into recipes such as this Quinoa Fried Rice or this Quinoa Breakfast Bowl. But don’t just take my word for it—when it comes to serving ideas for quinoa rice, the sky is truly the limit!
