Try this luscious, tangy sauce to make your meatloaf even more irresistible!

Meatloaf Sauce

We all know that meatloaf is one of those classic dishes. I know I ate it a lot for dinner while growing up. At our house, there was always a big dollop of ketchup on top of the meatloaf and plenty more on the side for dipping every forkful into. But we can do better than that, right? Well, that’s why I wanted to share this recipe for meatloaf sauce, which definitely goes above and beyond ordinary ketchup and can elevate any meatloaf recipe you use.

Of course, there is still ketchup in the sauce. After all, we’re not trying to reinvent the wheel. This recipe calls for the addition of barbecue sauce, Dijon mustard, and brown sugar. It gives you a sweet and tangy sauce with just a little kick to it. Perhaps the best part is that it’s hardly any work: you’re just mixing the ingredients together in a bowl. There is no cooking or extra preparation required, meaning this sauce can be whipped up in a matter of minutes.

Of course, you can use store-bought barbecue sauce, but if you want to make your own, there are a few options. One of my favorites is Spicy BBQ Sauce. I would also suggest this recipe for a Low-Carb, Sugar-Free BBQ Sauce or this Keto BBQ Sauce.

Is Meatloaf Sauce Healthy?

Meatloaf sauce is not typically considered healthy. Although it’s low in fat and calories, the sugar and sodium content are quite high. If you still want to indulge, keep your portion size in mind.

Finding Balance…

With so few ingredients, making meatloaf sauce is all about finding the right balance. After making the sauce once, you can make adjustments to the quantities to suit your personal taste. For example, you can adjust the sweetness of the sauce by adding more brown sugar, or perhaps using less. You can give it a little more zip by increasing the amount of mustard, or perhaps adding a small amount of sriracha sauce. Personally, I sometimes add a tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce to create a more umami flavor. With a sauce like this one, you’re always free to make your own adjustments.

How to make ahead and store

This sauce can be made in advance. Just make sure to keep it in an airtight container. In the refrigerator, it should stay well for at least 1 week, possibly 2.

Serving Suggestions

What good is meatloaf sauce without the right meatloaf recipe? Fortunately, I have a few meatloaf recipes for you to try with this sauce. For something simple, try this Easy Turkey Meatloaf Recipe. If you want meatloaf with a little bit of a twist, I’ve become a big fan of Italian Meatloaf, which I think every meatloaf lover should try at least once. Finally, if you’re looking for a healthier option, try this Low-Carb Paleo Meatloaf.
