Are These Maple-Tahini Grilled Sweet Potatoes Healthy?
This maple-tahini grilled sweet potatoes recipe contains plenty of natural ingredients rich with nutrients. Not only are sweet potatoes delicious, but they are also full of nutrients like fiber, vitamin C, and potassium. Tahini, a paste made from ground sesame seeds, also contributes plenty of nutrients to this side dish. Tahini provides healthy fats, and it contains minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron. This recipe is also plant-based, making it an excellent choice for both vegetarian and vegan diners. To reduce the amount of sugar in the maple-tahini sauce, you could consider replacing the maple syrup with an equal amount of unsweetened applesauce. If you’re aiming to reduce the salt in your diet, make sure to choose a natural tahini with no added salt.

What Is Tahini, Anyway?
Tahini is a flavorful paste made of sesame seeds that people around the globe have enjoyed for thousands of years. This tasty ingredient is especially popular in Middle Eastern dishes like baba ghanoush and hummus. You can certainly purchase your tahini at the grocery store, but did you know that it is also easy to make at home? To make your own tahini, simply add a cup of sesame seeds to a food processor and blend until the mixture achieves a crumbly consistency. If desired, you can add a tablespoon or two of olive oil until you get the perfect texture. Some people choose to toast their sesame seeds before grinding them into tahini paste, but this is optional. Homemade tahini is guaranteed to be fresh, and it is often a cheaper alternative to buying a commercial product.

Serving Suggestions
You can serve these grilled sweet potatoes with a wide range of dishes. Personally, I love serving these as a side to a homemade hamburger. Try an Air-Fryer Hamburger, Baked Hamburger, or Cowboy Burger with your sweet potatoes. To complement the tahini in your dipping sauce, you could also consider Cauliflower Tabbouleh or Chickpea Salad. If you’re in search of another veggie dish to pair with these grilled sweet potatoes, I’d recommend trying these Roasted Brussel Sprouts or this Roasted Zucchini And Squash recipe.

Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 2 pounds sweet potato about 3 medium sweet potatoes, cut into 1-inch wedges
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
- Salt and pepper to taste
For The Dip:
- 1/4 cup tahini
- 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons water
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat your grill to medium-high heat.
- While the grill heats, place the cumin seeds in a small, dry pan over medium heat. Toast them, stirring frequently, until lightly browned and fragrant, about 2-3 minutes. Transfer the seeds to a chopping board and crush them until finely ground using the bottom of a drinking glass.
- In a large bowl, toss together the sweet potato wedges with the olive oil, maple syrup, crushed cumin seeds, and salt and pepper to taste. Mix well to ensure the potatoes are evenly coated.
- Make 5-6 foil packages by placing 2 large pieces of tinfoil on top of each other. Very lightly brush the tinfoil with olive oil.
- Lay the wedges in a single row in the middle of each package, lengthwise, leaving a little space between each wedge. Fold the ends of the package tightly over the potatoes, then double fold the sides in, making sure the packages are tightly sealed.
- Place the packets on the grill and cook until sweet potatoes are tender and begin to blacken, about 12-14 minutes. Flip the packages once and repeat on the other side.
- Remove the packages from the grill and use a fork to open them up (careful, they’re hot!). Let cool for 5 minutes.
- Whisk together the ingredients for the dip in a medium-sized bowl and either drizzle onto the sweet potatoes or use as a dip.
- Garnish with cilantro and serve.
