Perfect steak in minutes—no lengthy prep work or cleanup needed! It’s one more reason to love the Instant Pot.

If steak is a favorite in your household, then this is a recipe you’ll definitely want to make note of. The Instant Pot is famous for dishes like soups and stews, but it can also do a brilliant job on straight-up proteins like steak. Follow this recipe, and you’ll have a steak cooked exactly to your liking with no hassle. No scrubbing the barbecue and hoping the weather cooperates, or turning on the exhaust fan for indoor cooking. And you’ll never have to play “Is it done yet?” while hovering over your stovetop or grill.

What makes the Instant Pot so successful with steak? First off, using the sear function on your machine gives you an easy route to the all-important caramelization on the outside, while the pressure-cook function keeps juices in and cooks your steak in record time. The result is restaurant-quality steak cooked with minimal fat and no lengthy prep work or cleanup. Instead, you’ll be freed up to make your favorite veggie sides, quick-cooking grains, or just a great salad while the steak cooks and rests. A delicious steak dinner on the table in 20 to 30 minutes? It’s thanks to the Instant Pot. Here’s everything you need to know to put it to use with confidence.

Is Instant-Pot Steak Healthy?

This Instant-Pot steak recipe is gluten-free, keto-friendly, and low in carbs. Steak is rich in protein and also contains important vitamins and minerals like iron and zinc. Sirloin steak is considered a cut that’s lower in fat compared to other cuts of beef. Our recipe calls for extra-virgin olive oil to sear the steak, a fat that’s known as a “healthy fat” because it’s primarily composed of monounsaturated fats. Consumed in moderation, this recipe can be part of a healthy diet.

If you’re looking to lower your consumption of cholesterol or saturated fat, make sure to trim off the excess fat from your steak. You can also consider reducing your portion size to make this recipe feed two rather than just one; slice the steak thinly on the angle and fan the slices across two plates, and you’ll still have a hearty, satisfying serving!

Know Exactly How Long to Pressure-Cook Your Steak

Take the guesswork out of the equation and spare your steak all that poking and prodding. This table outlines how long you should set your Instant Pot cook function after searing your steak. Times assume a two-inch-thick boneless steak. Allow for more time if cooking a bone-in steak.

DonenessTime
Rare2 minutes
Medium-Rare3 minutes
Medium5-6 minutes
Medium-Well8-9 minutes
Well Done10-12 minutes

How Do I Store Leftovers?

Let leftover steak cool completely and refrigerate it for up to 4 days. To freeze steak for up to 3 months, you should first wrap it in plastic and then place it in an airtight container. To thaw, let it sit overnight in the fridge; this maintains its texture better than using the ‘defrost’ feature on your microwave, which can dry it out. Leftover steak is delicious at room temperature over a salad or in a grain bowl, or you can reheat it in a pan on the stovetop.

First I want to thank you for sharing your amazing recipe on this “how to cook steak in a insta pot) it turned out great! I usuallly grill my steaks but with the snow covered grill that wasn’t an option.🤔🫡🙄 I decided to ask Google & they gave me a list of choices & yours sounded the easiest & the picture looked very scrumptious so it was the one I chose. So happy I did. The only thing I changed was that I am seared it. I used my griddle on the stove so that I could sear them all at once being that I used three New York strip steaks. I did use butter for searing. I also used 1 cup of chicken broth instead of water in the insta pot. Not much difference, I don’t believe so anyway. Thank you again for helping me create a great meal that got great results from my family. They loved it!;💯♥️

How long would you cook it if you wanted well-done steak you think ? It’s for a baby so it has to be fully cooked. TY

For a well-done steak, I’d go with 6-8 minutes on HIGH to make sure it’s fully cooked. Just check that it hits 160°F inside to be extra safe for the little one! 😊
