If you like mozzarella sticks, then you’re going to love these cheesy, crispy Halloumi Fries.

As we settle into our new home, my husband and I are seeking easy and delectable side dishes for dinner that can double as a snack the next day. After all, it’s such a blessing to have leftovers for a lunch break. That’s where halloumi fries come in.

These decadent cheese sticks are baked to golden brown perfection, with minimal mess and a whole lot of flavor. The outside is delightfully crispy, with a tender bite of cheese in the middle. Dip those sticks in your favorite sauce, and you have the perfect appetizer or side dish for your loved ones. That’s why I believe that halloumi fries were designed for parties. They’re so easy to pass around and can be paired with a wide array of tasty finger food classics.

Historically, halloumi cheese hails from the island of Cyprus, where it is most often fried or grilled. Traditionally, it was made from a mix of sheep’s and goat’s milk, but now it’s common to craft it from cow’s milk as well. In most grocery stores in the US, it can be found in the dairy section, although sometimes it will be in the imported food section as well.

Ingredients for Halloumi Fries: halloumi cheese sticks, all-purpose flour, panko breadcrumbs, egg, parsley, and dipping sauce.

Halloumi fries vs. mozzarella sticks

While the two finger foods are similar because they’re both breaded and can be deep-fried or baked, the types of cheeses that each one uses are distinctly different. Halloumi cheese is known for its high melting point, which keeps it solid for long periods of time during cooking. This means that it won’t ooze out of the breading easily, so there’s no need to freeze the sticks before cooking them—the way you would with mozzarella. Mozzarella melts much more quickly, and for that reason, can be a bit messier.

How do I store leftovers?

Let your halloumi fries cool completely to room temperature before transferring them to an airtight container. Refrigerate them for 2-3 days. If you’re a salad lover, chop them into little cubes and toss them into your next mix. Otherwise, reheat them in the oven at 350°F for 5-7 minutes.

Serving suggestions

Not sure what to dip your halloumi fries in? No worries, because I have plenty of options for you to choose from! If you’re craving something creamy with a hint of smokiness, then try Creamy Baba Ghanoush. On the other hand, if you’d like it smooth and herbaceous, then try Red Pepper Hummus or Greek Yogurt Dip. I’ve also found that a simple Marinara Sauce can be just as delectable for dipping, the way you would with mozzarella sticks. But if it’s a whole meal you’re crafting, then consider pairing your halloumi fries with Mediterranean Bowls or Sausage-Stuffed Peppers.
