I realize there’s way more depth and nuance to the culture of the largest country in South America—but sipping a caipirinha cocktail is an excellent way to begin exploring it.

This “perfect” caipirinha recipe is a tribute to Brazil’s most famous cocktail, a symbol of the country’s casual, celebratory style. Legend holds that it originated as a local remedy for colds in the countryside of São Paulo in the early 20th century. Today, the drink’s simple, direct blend of flavors highlights Brazilian pride in both local ingredients and convivial hospitality. By law, cachaça must be produced in Brazil and typically contains 38–48% alcohol by volume. There are two major styles: white or unaged, which is bottled soon after distillation and used mainly for cocktails like the caipirinha, and aged or golden, which develops richer flavors from resting in wooden barrels and is often enjoyed neat. Over 40,000 distilleries make cachaça across Brazil, ranging from large-scale industrial producers to small artisanal makers, each contributing to the drink’s diversity and deep roots in Brazilian culture.

How do I store leftovers?

Caipirinhas are best enjoyed fresh, as muddled lime oils and fresh citrus juice quickly lose their vibrancy and the sugar can start to separate. Store a leftover cocktail—sans ice—in an airtight container in the fridge and enjoy it within 1 day, before it becomes dull and bitter. A better plan is to freeze leftovers for up to 1 month, which will help retain the brightness of citrus and alcohol. Thaw in the fridge or on the counter for 20–30 minutes, then stir well. Ingredients

  • 1 medium-sized fresh lime
  • 2 teaspoons granulated or superfine sugar
  • 2 ounces cachaça
  • Extra lime wheel or wedge optional, for garnish

Instructions

  • Cut the lime in half lengthwise. Remove the seeds and white pith to reduce bitterness. Cut each half into 4 wedges for a total of 8 small pieces.
  • Place the lime wedges in a sturdy rocks glass. Sprinkle the sugar on top.
  • Use a muddler to firmly press the limes, extracting juice and essential oils. Avoid pulverizing the rinds too much to prevent excess bitterness.
  • Fill the glass with ice cubes.
  • Pour the cachaça over the ice. Stir well until the sugar is mostly dissolved and flavors are well combined.
  • Garnish with an extra lime wheel, if desired, and serve immediately
