Take a few apples and turn them into an unforgettable dessert pizza!

Apple pizza topped with baked apple slices, cinnamon, and a sweet white glaze.

When most people think about apples and dessert, they probably jump straight to apple pie or apple crisp. But apple pizza has its own unique taste and texture that makes it distinct from other desserts. If you’re a fan of apples and you’re looking for new ways to use them, this recipe for apple pizza is definitely one you’ll want to try.

Making an apple pizza is remarkably simple, which is another reason this recipe was an instant hit the first time I tried it. All you have to do is pre-cook the apples in butter and sugar, scatter them on top of the pizza crust, and prepare the glaze that goes on top. By the time the pizza comes out of the oven, the apples will be warm, sweet, and fill the kitchen with a pleasing aroma that’s similar to apple pie. It will truly feel like eating a little slice of heaven.

If you have a little extra time, I recommend this homemade Pizza Dough recipe rather than using store-bought dough. You can definitely taste the difference if you make the dough yourself. Another option is to make a Cauliflower Pizza Crust.

Is Apple Pizza Healthy?

As you can probably imagine, apple pizza is a mixed bag from a health standpoint. Obviously, the inclusion of apples has a lot of nutritional value. Apples are a source of fiber, antioxidants, and a variety of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C and potassium. In short, they are an important fruit to include in your diet. At the same time, the rest of the recipe includes a lot of butter and sugar, causing the amount of fat and calories in apple pizza to increase significantly. That makes this dessert pizza one that should be enjoyed in moderation.

Ingredients for Apple Pizza: Honeycrisp apples, butter, coconut sugar, lemon, cinnamon, powdered sugar, and pizza crust.

The Right Type Of Apple

I recommend using Honeycrisp apples for apple pizza, although there is some leeway based on your preferences. Honeycrisp apples have a firm texture and are known for their sweetness, which is why they work well on a dessert pizza. However, Granny Smith apples are also an option if you prefer more tart apples because they also have a firm texture. Cortland apples, meanwhile, have a better balance between sweetness and tartness. Fuji, Jonagold, and Pink Lady apples are also good options for making apple pizza. It all depends on your personal preferences and what apples are in season and available.

How do I store leftovers?

Any leftover apple pizza can be stored in an airtight container. In the fridge, it will stay good for 2-3 days. Feel free to eat it cold from the fridge or reheat it in the oven if you prefer to eat it warm.

Serving Suggestions

The best way to complement a slice of apple pizza is with a scoop of ice cream. I suggest Cottage Cheese Ice Cream or Cookie Dough Banana Ice Cream. If you want to make dessert extra special, you may want to try Coconut Milk Ice Cream with Rum and Eggnog, which is gluten-free and vegan-friendly. Of course, making apple pizza for breakfast is also an option. If that’s the case, I suggest pairing the pizza with a Fruit Smoothie or a Green Smoothie. You can also try pairing apple pizza with Strawberry Yogurt for a more balanced breakfast.
