This Healthy Tuna Salad Without Mayo recipe is flavorful and so easy to make! You won’t miss the mayo at all!

a sandwich filled with Healthy Tuna Salad

I’m a big fan of tuna salad. I guess it started back in high school when it became my go-to at lunchtime. Believe it or not, the best tuna salad I ever had came from a vending machine at my school cafeteria! It was always stocked with freshly made sandwiches (everything from chicken salad to the humble peanut butter and jelly), but it was always a run to make sure you could score a tuna salad. I guess I wasn’t the only one who loved it because it disappeared in no time!

To this day, tuna salad is one of my favorite lunches, and my numerous recipe variations prove just how much I enjoy it. My latest creation is this healthy tuna salad without mayo. It has all those flavors you know and love in a tuna salad, but we said adios to the mayo and used Greek yogurt instead! This salad is creamy, zingy, and bursting with flavors that are balanced perfectly.

This recipe takes a classic comfort food and gives it a modern twist. The idea of swapping mayo for Greek yogurt isn’t new, but it’s catching on as more people are looking for lighter, protein-packed options for their meals. Greek yogurt not only has fewer calories than mayo, but it also adds a subtle tanginess that pairs beautifully with the tuna. You’ll be amazed at how this simple change can enhance taste and add nutrition!

Is Tuna Salad Without Mayo healthy?

Absolutely, yes! This recipe is a fantastic option if you’re looking to make healthier lunch choices. By using Greek yogurt instead of mayo, you’re opting for a lower-calorie, higher-protein alternative that also offers beneficial probiotics. Plus, canned tuna is a good source of lean protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and essential nutrients like selenium and vitamin D.

This healthy tuna salad without mayo fits perfectly into many diets, including keto (if you serve it on lettuce instead of bread), Whole30 (as long as you use compliant Greek yogurt), low-carb, and even Mediterranean. It’s versatile and made from ingredients you’ll feel good about enjoying and sharing with others.

The Key Ingredient Swap

The star of this recipe is substituting Greek yogurt for the traditional mayonnaise. Greek yogurt has a similar creamy texture to mayo but comes with added benefits. It’s lower in fat and calories and also rich in protein, which makes this swap ideal if you’re aiming for a lighter and more nourishing option. Also, Greek yogurt gives a slight tanginess that I think really makes the salad taste fresher and more vibrant.

Another noteworthy ingredient is lemon juice, which adds a burst of brightness that helps balance the creaminess of the yogurt. If you’re new to swapping out mayo, this is a great way to try that out. The smooth Greek yogurt keeps the texture just right while giving you a nutritional boost that mayo simply can’t offer.

How To Make ahead and Store

In the fridge, when stored in an airtight container, tuna salad will last for about 3-5 days. This makes it a great option for meal prep to save time during the week.

Serving Suggestions

This healthy tuna salad is incredibly versatile and pairs well with many different side dishes. For a light lunch, serve it with some crunchy cucumber slices and carrot sticks or on top of a fresh Cucumber Onion Salad. For an additional protein boost, you can serve it alongside this Lentil Salad. You can also scoop it into halved avocados for a beautiful, nutrient-rich presentation that is both satisfying and delicious. A tall glass of iced green tea or sparkling water with a wedge of lemon will complement the flavors perfectly, but for a touch of elegance, try serving it with this Strawberry Lemonade.
