Hasselback Sweet Potatoes are a unique way to serve a classic dish!

Hasselback Sweet Potatoes

It all started in Stockholm, Sweden. An innovative chef at the Hasselbacken restaurant developed a method of preparing and cooking potatoes to help any added flavors, sauces, herbs, and spices get into every single bite. And thus, the Hasselback potato was born. This sweet potato version takes that recipe to the next level.

The really fun part is getting to decide exactly which flavors, sauces, herbs, and/or spices are going onto and into your Hasselback. You could even host a “Build Your Own Hasselback” event and provide the scrubbed potatoes, along with a variety of sweet and savory toppings to be incorporated into each person’s creation.

You are going to love how easy it is to customize this dish. Add butter and mini marshmallows for the kids. Go for a throwback to your own childhood with a sweet concoction that features maple syrup and a little cinnamon. Enjoy a savory side filled with your favorite combo of chives, rosemary, tarragon, thyme, parsley, or sage. No matter which way you slice it, these Hasselback sweet potatoes are guaranteed to please a crowd.

Are Hasselback Sweet Potatoes Healthy?

Sweet potatoes are a nutritional powerhouse. They’re full of fiber and loaded with antioxidants. Notably, they’re high in vitamins A, B6, and C, plus potassium, manganese, and copper; they even contain some protein.

Now, the toppings you choose will, of course, have their own nutritional value, whether good or bad. Some butter and brown sugar would add calories and saturated fat, while some simple herbs, for example, can make for a very light dish.

Getting Perfect Hasselback Slices

There’s a trick to this. My favorite method is to put a chopstick down on either side of the sweet potato (or whatever potato you’re using). Wooden spoons would work, too, assuming they’re around the same size. Then, make even slices across the entire length of the potato.

The chopsticks or spoons act as a barrier so you don’t accidentally cut all the way through the potato. A sharp knife helps, too—dull blades and the tough skin of sweet potatoes do not mix.

How Do I Store Leftovers?

Leftovers can be kept tightly sealed in the fridge for 2-3 days and then reheated. To reheat, bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 10-15 minutes, or until heated through.

Serving Suggestions

Hasselback sweet potatoes can practically be a meal by themselves, especially with added toppings. If you are going to serve them alongside other dishes, you may want to choose smaller-sized spuds. They pair well with Lemon-Roasted Chicken, a Grilled Romaine Salad, and Pan-Seared Salmon.
