Garlic Butter Steak Bites are perfect for special occasions but easy enough for any weeknight.

I’m a massive fan of cooking competition shows, and I’ve watched world-renowned chefs baste steak in butter. That’s what this recipe for garlic butter steak bites reminds me of, not so much because they are basted in the butter, but because they are finished in it for that same rich flavor.

I love how fast dinner comes together with this recipe. Since the beef is cut into bite-sized pieces, it cooks quickly. And, since you only need one skillet, cleanup is a breeze. I prefer to use sirloin when making steak recipes like this, but you can also use tenderloin, rib eye, or even New York strip steak. I recommend cutting the steak into 1-inch cubes, trying to cut them as evenly as possible.

You can add a few sprigs of thyme or rosemary to the skillet when cooking the steak. Both complement the beef beautifully, imparting earthy flavor. Add them with the butter to finish the basting of the steak at the end. Another way to add flavor and provide a side to serve with the steak is to sauté sliced onions with the beef.

If you happen to have leftovers, consider turning them into fajitas, quesadillas, nachos, tacos, or topping a salad with them the next day. I also admit to popping them into my mouth straight from the refrigerator as a midday protein boost. Yum!

Make an entire dinner in the same skillet

Using the same skillet to make multiple dishes is easy with the proper planning. Before cooking the steak bites, make this Shiitake Mushroom Recipe. It uses olive oil and garlic like the steak, so it complements the beef. Following the recipe’s directions will allow the mushrooms to cook without burning and sticking to the skillet. Besides, mushrooms and steak naturally go together, as you often find mushrooms offered as side dishes in high-end steakhouses.

As with the shiitake mushrooms, the veggies should not be cooked to the point where they burn and stick to the pan, making the addition of the steak problem-free. How do I store leftovers?

Allow leftover garlic butter steak bites (is there such a thing as leftovers?) to cool to room temperature before refrigerating in an airtight container for up to 4 days. To prevent overcooking, reheat them gently on the stove or in the microwave (covered with a damp paper towel). You can also freeze the cooled steak bites in a freezer-safe zippered bag or container for up to 3 months. Defrost the steak bites overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

Serving suggestions

These garlic butter steak bites taste like a dish you would get at a fancy steakhouse, so the rest of your meal should rise to meet them. Put out a basket of Potato Rolls and butter sprinkled with sea salt. A classic Wedge Salad is the perfect start to your dinner. It also takes only 10 minutes to prepare, and you can make it before starting your other dishes, then keep it ready in the refrigerator.

I’ve already given you some great vegetable side dishes, so let’s talk about traditional starches. These Stuffed Baked Potatoes require a little planning, but they are well worth it. Another great option is these delicious Roasted Red Potatoes, or these Sour Cream Mashed Potatoes if you prefer a quicker side dish. Rice Cooker Risotto or Seasoned Rice come together in about 30 minutes, making them an ideal side dish if you prefer rice to potatoes. Finally, a dinner of this caliber deserves the perfect dessert, so prepare Chocolate Crème Brûlée for a meal that hits all the bases.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds sirloin steak, cut into bite-size pieces
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 shallot, minced
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Season the steak bites generously with salt and pepper.

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add steak bites in a single layer, working in batches if necessary, and sear until browned on all sides, about 1-3 minutes per side, depending on desired doneness. Remove from the skillet temporarily.

  • Reduce heat to medium. In the same skillet, add butter and minced shallot. Cook until softened.
  • Add garlic and cook for about 1 minute until the garlic is fragrant but not burnt.

  • Return all steak bites to the skillet, toss in the garlic butter to coat evenly. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and serve immediately.
