Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
- 16 ounces lean ground beef
- 1/2 small green bell pepper, seeded and diced
- 8 ounces tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 1/4 teaspoons yellow mustard
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 4 hamburger buns
- Preferred toppings, such as pickles
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and onion and sauté until soft. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain excess fat and stir in the bell pepper; cook for another 2 minutes.

- In a bowl, mix together the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. Pour the sauce over the beef mixture. Stir well, season with salt and pepper, and let simmer for about 10 minutes to blend the flavors.

- Spoon the hot sloppy joe mixture onto the buns, top with optional pickles, and serve immediately.
