Ingredients

  • 1 loaf Italian bread about 16-17 inches long
  • Olive oil as needed for brushing
  • 1 cup pizza sauce low-sodium, plain
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • Mini pepperonis as needed (optional)
  • Fresh basil or oregano chopped (for optional garnish)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F so it is hot and ready.
  • Cut the loaf in half lengthwise to expose the soft interior. Brush a thin layer of olive oil evenly over the cut surface of each half.

  • Spread the pizza sauce evenly over it.

  • Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese generously over the sauce. Lightly sprinkle Italian seasoning on top. If using, place mini pepperonis as a topping.

  • Place the prepared bread on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 10 to 15 minutes until the cheese is melted and the edges are lightly toasted.

  • Remove the pizza bread from the oven, allow to cool for a few minutes, then slice and serve warm. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired.
