Hi Sunday peeps!
Today, I have something really quick that I wanted to share with you, that I’ve been thinking about this week.
Something that I’ve been looking at in my own life is “who am I calling out to?”
In 1 Kings 18, we find the story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal having a “duel.” The prophets are to prove that Baal is god by calling down fire onto their bull sacrifice.
Verse 26 says, “Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. “Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.”
And then verse 29 says, “Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.”
Did you catch that? They called on him from morning to noon and NOTHING. The day went on and still NADA.
No response. No god even paid attention to them…because they were calling out to false gods.
But, when Elijah calls on the name of The Lord? WHOLE DIFFERENT STORY. Which you should read ?
It got me wondering, what false gods am I calling out to, begging them to somehow show their power in my life and fulfill me.
Is it my body? Is it my job? My relationship? And, if I am honest, I find myself “calling out” to all of these things on a regular basis.
And, you know what? Just like it says, “there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention” that is the exact experience I have when I look to these worldly things, and they (accidentally) become gods in my life.
They don’t fill me. They leave me empty. They do NOTHING FOR ME. I have to KEEP calling to them, because they never leave me feeling sustained.
But those moments where I cling to God and call to Him to fill me? The COMPLETE opposite. It’s lasting. It’s fulfilling. I have peace and joy and so many other things. God actually ANSWERS.
And that is what I am trying to do more often. It’s so easy to call out to the world, when that is what we are surrounded with. But, we have to look UP to the one who will fulfill our every need.
So, who are you calling out to?
