These quick and easy heart healthy Avocado Chocolate Truffles tastes like an Almond Joy and are gluten free, vegan and naturally sweetened!
Pin Healthy Avocado Chocolate Truffles
Oh hey it’s me again, just making you desserts with avocado!
It started with avocado vegan chocolate truffles with champagne and then went to my FAV whole wheat avocado chocolate chip cookies and my Mom’s personal fav dessert my paleo german chocolate cake.
Avocado and chocolate are honestly just made for each other it’s so insane and that is why these truffles? YOU ARE GONNA LIKE THEM.
Healthy Swaps
Sooo here’s something I think we all can agree with. Truffles are DELISH. They’re sweet, they’re rich, they’re smooth… they’re pretty much heaven.
What if I told you that they can be made with healthier ingredients and still win you over?
Butter: Instead of butter, we’re going to use avocado for this Healthy Avocado Chocolate Truffles recipe- it’s smooth, it’s creamy, and it’s the perfect secret ingredient to make these truffles taste bomb. My Mint Avocado Cheesecake Truffles also use avocado to make them extra creamy!
Coconut oil: Also a great butter substitute that is a more heart healthy fat.
Chocolate protein powder – You can be used in place of chocolate for that same flavor you love, with an added boost of protein!
Healthy Avocado Truffles Ingredients
Truffles are a fabulous dessert to share with those you love this time of year. Rich and delicious, they’re the perfect treat! This recipe is super simple and uses ingredients that you probably have on hand already! For these paleo truffles, you will need:
- An Avocado
- Chocolate Casein protein powder (can be substituted with regular unsweetened cocoa powder)
- Vanilla Extract
- Almond Extract
- Milk Chocolate Chips (dairy free works too)
- Coconut Oil
- Sweetened Coconut Flakes
How to make Avocado Truffles
Blend
Peel your avocado and remove the pit. Pop it in a food processor and blend until smooth. Add in the vanilla extract, almond extract, and protein powder and continue to blend until the mixture is well combined.
Melt
Put the chocolate chips and coconut oil into a microwave-safe bowl and microwave for about 1 ½ minutes, stopping to stir every 20-30 seconds or until the chips are melted.
Stir
Add the avocado mixture into the bowl of melted chocolate and stir until very smooth.
Refrigerate
Cover the bowl with a layer of saran and pop it in the fridge for 2 hours.
Prepare
Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper, and fill a shallow bowl with the sweetened coconut flakes.
Scoop
Using a cookie scoop and your hands to roll, form evenly sized balls. Roll the balls in your bowl of coconut flakes until all sides are covered.
Devour
Keep these vegan truffles in the fridge until you are ready to serve. Enjoy!
How Long Do Chocolate Truffles Last?
These are so tasty that you may want to devour these all in one sitting! But if you’ve made a lot of truffles and want to save some for another time or if you simply want to make a couple of batches ahead of time, you’re in luck. Truffles like these will last well for about a week in an airtight container in your fridge!
Are Truffles Vegan?
This is a great question. Some truffles that use butter, whipping cream, or other animal products are not vegan. Just like my Dairy Free Vegan Chocolate Truffles, these absolutely are vegan and I guarantee you are going to LOVE them! We’ve substituted avocado and coconut oil for the usual butter, and if you use dairy-free chocolate chips, you’re all set!
If you go now, you might even be able to eat them tonight! WIN.

These look delish! I will definitely be making them this Christmas! If I omit the protien powder will it alter that taste much??
Tate says
I haven’t made them without, however the protein powder is so small that I think you will have absolutely no problemo! 🙂 you could also try throwing in just a tbsp of cocoa powder. But whatever way you chose I am sure they will turn out fab! Let me know how they work out 🙂

sounds interesting, must try but what exactly is the chocolate protein powder and where do I find it? Is it the chocolate protein powder you use to make protein shakes with? any brand will do?
Tate says
Yep! Just the chocolate protein powder you use to make protein shakes…whatever brand that you like! 🙂

Ok, can I just say WOW! Almond Joy is my favorite candy bar and if I could somehow make that healthy my life would be complete. Pinning and purchasing avocado at the store tomorrow. Thanks for sharing.

I made these today. I’ve never had avocado and was a little scared. But they are delish! One thing, they would not firm up! I left them in the fridge for longer than the 2 hours. Used more then the 1/2 cup coconut and put them back in the fridge and they are still a goopy mess. Any idea what I did wrong? Or what I can do next time to fix this?
Taylor Kiser says
1. I am so glad they were delicious! 2. Oh man! I am so so sorry that they didn’t firm! I have made them many times with no problems. But let me make another batch tomorrow morning and then it’ll be easier for me to help you trouble shoot! Sound good? 🙂
Taylor Kiser says
Okay so I remade them today and, unfortunately, mine were perfect and set up really nice. So I am not sure what went wrong. Did you see protein powder or cocoa powder??
Rachel says
Want to trade?! Lol! I used protein powder, whey if that makes a difference. I probably just messed up. Because I had extra avocado, I made a double batch, and probably forgot to double something. Maybe I shouldn’t have peeled the avocado? I don’t know. I will try again one day! Thanks. 🙂
Taylor Kiser says
No, definitely peel the avocado!! You don’t want any skin in it!
The only thing I can think of, is that maybe you have a not-so-absorbent protein powder? I would recommend using cocoa powder or at least half cocoa powder (if you don’t like the taste of dark chocolate…or use all cocoa powder and add some sort of dry sweetener like truvia!)
Also, I did use Casein protein powder, which is slightly thicker! If you have some, that could work too!
I am sorry it didn’t work out for you! I hope that those tips helped!
anlaur says
Do these need to stay refrigerated? I’d love to send these to my cousin who is gluten-free. But they’d have to withstand a few days of shipping. Thoughts?
Taylor Kiser says
Unfortunately, they definitely need to stay refrigerated, or else they won’t stay firm. I’m sorry!
Denise Shamrowicz says
Hi! These look delicious! But I do think it’s important to add even though there is no sugar added, the chocolate chips do add a decent amount of actual sugar. I plan on making these using dark chocolate and maybe mixing some dates in with the avocado in my vitamix to see what kind of results I can get with less sugar. Also, the sweetened coconut also adds sugar. You can use unsweetened instead. I would not necessarily call these healthy with all the added refined sugar.
Taylor Kiser says
Hi Denise, Thanks for bringing up those points. Everyone has a different view of health, and I do think that these are much healthier than a regular truffle 🙂 But you make some great points! Let me know if your idea works! Thanks! 😀
