Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion, carrots, and celery, and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.

Add the rinsed split peas, bay leaf, thyme, and chicken broth to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer. Cover and cook

If using, add the diced ham and continue to simmer for another 15 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove the bay leaf before serving.
